Recently Diagnosed or Relapsed? Stop Looking For a Miracle Cure, and Use Evidence-Based Therapies To Enhance Your Treatment and Prolong Your Remission

Multiple Myeloma an incurable disease, but I have spent the last 25 years in remission using a blend of conventional oncology and evidence-based nutrition, supplementation, and lifestyle therapies from peer-reviewed studies that your oncologist probably hasn't told you about.

Supplementation- Sars-CoV-2 Virus?

Share Button

When I write about nutritional supplementation reducing the risk of virus’ such as the SARS-CoV-2 virus I am doing so by completely excluding any/all discussion of vaccines.

I say this because of a group of multiple myeloma survivors that I know. Two facts make this group stand out.

  1. First, this group of people are patients/survivors of a blood cancer called multiple myeloma. Research has shown that myeloma makes these patients more susceptible to the covid virus in every way. Especially those MM patients undergoing active therapies.
  2. Second, this group cannot agree on the benefit or not, of FDA approved covid vaccines.

This group is at an increased risk of getting and dying from the SARS-CoV-2 virus and yet many of then, not all but many, are adamant about not getting any of the vaccines.

Further, I have the belief that society will face similar virus’ in the coming decades. As the saying goes, “prepare for the worst, hope for the best.”  In this case, being prepared means enhancing your immune system with those supplements, nutrition and lifestyle therapies that can reduce your risk of virus’.

Have you been diagnosed with monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance or smoldering multiple myeloma (MGUS, SMM)? Have you been diagnosed with full multiple myeloma (MM)?

The Role of Nutrients in Prevention, Treatment and Post-Coronavirus Disease-2019 (COVID-19)

“SARS-CoV-2 virus, infecting human cells via its spike protein, causes Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). COVID-19 is characterized by

  • shortness of breath,
  • fever, and
  • pneumonia and is sometimes fatal.

Unfortunately, to date, there is still no definite therapy to treat COVID-19. Therefore, the World Health Organization (WHO) approved only supportive care.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the need to maintain a correct intake of nutrients to support very weakened patients in overcoming disease arose. The literature available on nutrient intake for COVID-19 is mainly focused on prevention.

However, the safe intake of micro- and/or macro-nutrients can be useful either for preventing infection and supporting the immune response during COVID-19, as well as in the post-acute phase, i.e., “long COVID”, that is sometimes characterized by the onset of various long lasting and disabling symptoms.

The aim of this review is to focus on the role of nutrient intake during all the different phases of the disease, including prevention, the acute phase, and finally long COVID…”

The Potential Impact of Zinc Supplementation on COVID-19 Pathogenesis

“This review will therefore discuss the potential of zinc as preventive and therapeutic agent alone or in combination with other strategies, as zinc meets all the above described criteria…

Especially older subjects, patients with chronic diseases and most of the remaining COVID-19 risk groups would most likely benefit. Although studies are needed testing the effect of zinc as therapeutic option for established disease, preventive supplementation of subjects from risk groups should begin now, as zinc is a cost-efficient, globally available and simple to use option with little to no side effects..”

Can vitamin D protect against the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)?

“Several recent studies have looked at the impact of vitamin D on COVID-19-

  • One study of 489 people found that those who had a vitamin D deficiency were more likely to test positive for the virus that causes COVID-19 than people who had normal levels of vitamin D.
  • Other research has observed high rates of vitamin D deficiency in people with COVID-19 who experienced acute respiratory failure. These people had a significantly higher risk of dying.
  • And a small, randomized study found that of 50 people hospitalized with COVID-19 who were given a high dose of a type of vitamin D (calcifediol), only one needed treatment in the intensive care unit. In contrast, among the 26 people with COVID-19 who weren’t given calcifediol, 13 needed to be treated in the intensive care unit…”

Potential benefits and risks of omega-3 fatty acids supplementation to patients with COVID-19

“Studies have shown that infection, excessive coagulation, cytokine storm, leukopenia, lymphopenia, hypoxemia and oxidative stress have also been observed in critically ill Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) patients in addition to the onset symptoms…

Although the inflammatory resolution improved by EPA and DHA could contribute to the recovery of patients infected with SARS-CoV-2, Omega-3 fatty acids supplementation cannot be recommended before randomized and controlled trials are carried out…”

Blood omega-3 fatty acids and death from COVID-19: A Pilot Study

“Very-long chain omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) have anti-inflammatory properties that may help reduce morbidity and mortality from COVID-19 infection…

Using Probiotics to Flatten the Curve of Coronavirus Disease COVID-2019 Pandemic

“Probiotics are live microorganisms that when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit on the host (). Clinical evidence shows that certain probiotic strains help to prevent bacterial and viral infections, including gastroenteritis, sepsis, and respiratory tract infections (RTIs). The reason for adding probiotic strains to the overall prevention and care strategy is founded in science and clinical studies, albeit hitherto none directly on the etiological agent of this pandemic…

Government funding is being used to test numerous drugs but just as important, they should fund probiotic trials.

In addition, use of recognized prebiotics (e.g., fructans, galactans) to enhance propagation of probiotic strains and indigenous beneficial microbes should be recommended as part of the overall strategy to flatten the curve (, )…”

A Preventive Role of Exercise Across the Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) Pandemic

“Obesity is defined as a condition of excess body fat and represents a state of low-grade chronic inflammation and impaired immunity that is associated with many debilitating and life-threatening disorders. These include respiratory dysfunction, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, some cancers, metabolic risk, and associated co-morbidities, some of which are widely recognized as being related with more severe COVID-19 () (Figure 1)…

The advice could provide stimulation for the human constitution and could play a potential effect on resisting the virus. In terms of exercise benefits, there are multiple advantages of exercise in relation to human health…”

    Hi Tricia-

My situation may be very different from yours. My MM is not active. I follow an anti-mm lifestyle but again, what I do may or may not be right for you.
