I first came across AHCC as a complementary therapy when I read a study about the potential of AHCC for clearing the HPV virus. HPV increases the risk of my cancer, multiple myeloma, and I thought that I should try to get rid of the virus that causes warts. I am a long-term survivor of an incurable blood cancer called multiple myeloma. Many cancer patients search for natural therapies that might strengthen the immune system without interfering with chemotherapy, radiation, or immunotherapy.
One supplement that receives increasing attention is AHCC (Active Hexose Correlated Compound), a standardized extract produced from cultured shiitake mushroom (Lentinula edodes) mycelia.
Laboratory studies suggest AHCC may enhance immune function by activating natural killer (NK) cells, dendritic cells, and T lymphocytes. Early human studies also suggest potential benefits for reducing treatment-related side effects and improving quality of life.
However, AHCC is not a cure for cancer, and current evidence is not strong enough to recommend it as standard cancer treatment.
Here’s what cancer patients should know.
AHCC was developed in Japan during the 1980s.
Unlike ordinary mushroom powders, AHCC is produced through a patented fermentation process using cultured shiitake mushroom mycelia.

A randomized placebo-controlled trial found that six months of AHCC supplementation increased clearance of persistent high-risk HPV infection compared with placebo.
Because persistent HPV infection causes several cancers—including cervical, anal, penile, and oropharyngeal cancers—this research has attracted considerable attention.
However, preventing HPV-related cancers is different from treating established cancer.
Most studies report excellent tolerability.
Reported side effects include:

Nevertheless, patients should discuss AHCC with their oncologist before beginning supplementation.
This is especially important for people receiving:
Current evidence does not suggest AHCC reduces chemotherapy effectiveness.
In fact, researchers are actively studying whether AHCC may improve treatment tolerance.
Still, because immune therapies are becoming increasingly individualized, patients should never begin supplements without discussing them with their oncology team.
Although AHCC is promising, several limitations remain.

As with curcumin, medicinal mushrooms, exercise, nutrition, and sleep, the goal is to improve the body’s resilience while conventional therapies target the cancer itself.
