How Carboplatin + Paclitaxel Works

Carboplatin

Carboplatin is a platinum chemotherapy.

It damages cancer cell DNA, making it impossible for rapidly dividing cells to survive.

Compared with cisplatin, carboplatin generally causes:

  • less kidney damage
  • less hearing loss
  • less severe nausea

However, it causes more suppression of blood counts.


Paclitaxel (Taxol)

Paclitaxel is a taxane chemotherapy.

Instead of damaging DNA, it prevents cancer cells from dividing by stabilizing microtubules.

Because nerve cells also depend upon microtubules, paclitaxel is the major cause of chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN).


Which Cancers Are Treated?

Carboplatin + Paclitaxel is commonly used for:

  • ovarian cancer
  • fallopian tube cancer
  • primary peritoneal cancer
  • endometrial cancer
  • cervical cancer
  • non-small cell lung cancer
  • thymic carcinoma
  • carcinoma of unknown primary

Typical Treatment Schedule

Most patients receive treatment every three weeks.

Recovery for approximately 20 days

Some ovarian cancer patients instead receive weekly paclitaxel plus carboplatin, which may reduce neuropathy and improve quality of life for selected patients.

The “Bad”

Common but manageable side effects include:

  • constipation
  • muscle pain
  • mouth sores

Most improve within days to weeks after treatment.


The “Ugly”

Potential long-term toxicities include:

Peripheral Neuropathy

Paclitaxel-induced neuropathy may persist months—or even years—for some patients.

Strategies with evidence include:

  • cryotherapy (cold gloves/socks)
  • exercise
  • acupuncture
  • careful dose adjustments when symptoms become significant

Hearing Changes

Although less common than with cisplatin, carboplatin may still affect hearing.

Patients should report:

  • ringing
  • hearing loss
  • balance problems

Bone Marrow Suppression

Carboplatin frequently lowers:
