Chemotherapy for Cancer: What Patients Need to Know Before, During, and After Treatment. Learn how chemotherapy works, common side effects, ways to reduce toxicity, evidence-based complementary therapies, and practical tips for getting through treatment.

Like radiation, surgery, and immunotherapy, chemotherapy for cancer can be a beneficial cancer therapy yet cause short- and long-term damage to the cancer patient. In my experience, cancer patients benefit by knowing the pros and cons of their therapies as well as evidence-based therapies that can reduce their risk of side effects.

This is a general post about chemotherapy for cancer. I have also posted blogs about specific chemo combinations such as Gemcitabine + Cisplatin, Carboplatin + Paclitaxel, and Adiamycin + Cyclophosphamide (see below).

I am a long-term survivor of an incurable blood cancer called multiple myeloma. My research and experience with evidence-based non-conventional therapies are the reason why I have lived in complete remission from my incurable blood cancer since achieving complete remission in early 1999. I have learned that the best way to manage cancer is to combine the best of conventional and evidence-based non-conventional therapies.

I have come to believe that therapy-induced side effects can be life-threatening while ruining quality of life. Consider therapies shown to reduce possible side effects.

For many people, the word chemotherapy immediately brings images of nausea, hair loss, fatigue, and severe illness.

The reality is more nuanced.

Modern chemotherapy saves millions of lives every year. It remains one of the most effective cancer treatments available. At the same time, chemotherapy affects healthy cells as well as cancer cells, which explains why side effects occur.

Fortunately, today’s patients have far more options for preventing and managing treatment-related side effects than ever before. Better medications, improved supportive care, exercise, nutrition, and evidence-based complementary therapies can significantly improve quality of life during treatment.

What Is Chemotherapy?

Chemotherapy refers to medications designed to kill rapidly dividing cells.

Cancer cells divide faster than most healthy cells, making them particularly vulnerable to chemotherapy drugs.

Unfortunately, some healthy tissues also divide rapidly, including:

  • Bone marrow
  • Hair follicles
  • Digestive tract lining
  • Skin
  • Reproductive cells

These normal tissues explain many of chemotherapy’s side effects.


How Does Chemotherapy Work?

Different chemotherapy drugs attack cancer cells in different ways.

Some damage DNA.

Others prevent cells from dividing.

Some stop proteins needed for growth.

Others trigger programmed cell death (apoptosis).

Because cancer cells can develop resistance, oncologists often combine several chemotherapy drugs into a chemotherapy regimen.

Why Is Chemotherapy Given?
