Cold Exposure for Cancer Survivors: What We Know About the Wim Hof Method and Cryotherapy. Can exposing yourself to cold water or extremely cold temperatures improve your health after cancer? The answer is: maybe—but the evidence is still developing.

Cold exposure has exploded in popularity over the past decade. Elite athletes, biohackers, and wellness enthusiasts praise cold plunges, ice baths, whole-body cryotherapy, and the Wim Hof Method for reducing inflammation, improving mood, boosting energy, and speeding recovery.

As a long-term cancer survivor, I am always interested in low-toxicity lifestyle interventions that may improve quality of life. But my standard is the same whether I’m discussing a prescription drug, a supplement, or a wellness practice:

What does the evidence actually show?

The good news is that researchers are beginning to answer that question.

My fascination with cold therapy began with athletes undergoing cryotherapy. I wondered about the practice of calming inflammation. The video and post below help to flesh out the pros and cons of cold therapy.

My research and experience with evidence-based non-conventional therapies are the reasons why I have lived in complete remission from my incurable blood cancer since achieving complete remission in early 1999. I have learned that the best way to manage aggressive cancers is to combine the best of conventional and evidence-based non-conventional therapies.

I have come to believe that therapy-induced side effects can be life-threatening while ruining quality of life. Consider therapies shown to reduce possible side effects.

What Is Cold Exposure?

Cold exposure generally refers to intentionally exposing the body to cold temperatures through one of several methods:

  • Cold showers
  • Ice baths or cold plunges (typically 50–59°F / 10–15°C)
  • Cold-water swimming
  • Whole-body cryotherapy chambers (-166°F to -220°F / -110°C to -140°C for 2–3 minutes)
  • The Wim Hof Method, which combines:
    • Controlled breathing
    • Gradual cold exposure
    • Meditation and mental focus

Although these approaches differ substantially, they share one common goal:

Triggering adaptive stress responses that may improve resilience.


How Might Cold Exposure Help?

Researchers believe cold exposure influences several biological systems.

1. Reduced Chronic Inflammation

Chronic inflammation contributes to:

  • Cancer progression
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Diabetes
  • Obesity
  • Depression
  • Aging

A 2025 meta-analysis of 11 randomized controlled trials found that whole-body cryotherapy reduced inflammatory markers, including IL-1β, while increasing the anti-inflammatory IL-10. These effects appeared strongest in athletes and individuals with obesity.

This is encouraging because inflammation is one of the major biological processes associated with both cancer recurrence and long-term survivorship issues.


2. Improved Stress Response

Cold exposure activates the sympathetic nervous system.

This causes temporary increases in:

  • Norepinephrine
  • Epinephrine (adrenaline)
  • Dopamine

Researchers believe these hormones may explain why many people report:

  • Better mood
  • Increased alertness
  • Greater energy
  • Improved resilience to stress

The Wim Hof Method appears to amplify these responses through controlled breathing combined with cold exposure. A recent systematic review concluded that the method shows promising anti-inflammatory effects, although larger studies are still needed.


3. Possible Immune Modulation

One of the most fascinating studies on the Wim Hof Method showed that trained participants could voluntarily influence part of their immune response.

Compared with controls, participants demonstrated:

  • Higher epinephrine
  • More IL-10
  • Lower pro-inflammatory cytokines after experimental endotoxin exposure

This does not mean people can “control” their immune system at will.

It does suggest that breathing plus cold exposure may influence immune regulation in measurable ways.


4. Exercise Recovery

Athletes have long used cold therapy.

Evidence suggests it may:

  • Reduce soreness
  • Decrease inflammation
  • Speed recovery after intense exercise

However, timing matters.

Several sports medicine studies suggest that frequent cold immersion immediately after resistance training may blunt muscle growth adaptations. If building strength is your goal, waiting several hours after lifting may be preferable.

For cancer survivors focused on walking, aerobic exercise, or managing fatigue, this concern is usually less important.


What About Cancer?

This is where we need to be careful.

At present:

There is no evidence that cold plunges, cryotherapy, or the Wim Hof Method treat cancer.

None.

However, researchers are beginning to ask more interesting questions.

Because cold exposure appears to influence:

  • inflammation
  • immune signaling
  • metabolism
  • brown fat activation

Scientists are investigating whether these changes could someday complement conventional cancer therapy.

At this point, that research remains preliminary.

Cold exposure should be viewed as a supportive lifestyle intervention—not a cancer treatment.


Could Cold Exposure Help Cancer Survivors?

Potential benefits include:

Reduced fatigue

Many survivors report feeling energized after cold showers or brief cold plunges.

Clinical evidence is still limited, but improved alertness makes biological sense given increases in norepinephrine.


Better mood

Cold exposure stimulates neurotransmitters associated with:

  • motivation
  • attention
  • mood

Small studies suggest improvements in perceived well-being, although larger trials are needed.


Reduced inflammation

Persistent inflammation contributes to many late effects of cancer therapy, including:

  • fatigue
  • cardiovascular disease
  • frailty

If cold exposure safely lowers inflammatory markers, this could become increasingly relevant for survivorship.


Recovery from exercise

Cancer rehabilitation programs increasingly emphasize exercise.

Cold therapy may help reduce soreness and encourage continued activity for some survivors.


What About Whole-Body Cryotherapy?

Whole-body cryotherapy (WBC) involves standing in an extremely cold chamber for about 2–3 minutes.

Current research suggests WBC may:

  • lower inflammatory cytokines
  • improve recovery
  • reduce soreness
  • improve subjective well-being

The evidence is promising but still relatively small, and standardized treatment protocols are lacking.


Is the Wim Hof Method Different?

Yes.

The Wim Hof Method combines:

  • breathing exercises
  • gradual cold exposure
  • mindfulness

Researchers increasingly believe the breathing component contributes significantly to its physiological effects.

A 2024 systematic review concluded:

  • anti-inflammatory effects appear promising
  • exercise performance benefits remain inconsistent
  • larger, better-designed clinical trials are needed

Who Should NOT Practice Cold Exposure?

Cold exposure is not appropriate for everyone.

Talk with your physician before trying it if you have:

  • heart disease
  • uncontrolled hypertension
  • arrhythmias
  • Raynaud’s syndrome
  • severe peripheral vascular disease
  • uncontrolled asthma
  • significant neuropathy
  • advanced frailty

Cancer survivors receiving active chemotherapy or immunotherapy should also discuss cold exposure with their oncology team.


A Critical Safety Warning About Wim Hof Breathing

This point deserves emphasis.

Never perform Wim Hof breathing while:

  • swimming
  • driving
  • in a bathtub
  • underwater
  • operating machinery

The breathing technique can cause lightheadedness or loss of consciousness. There have been reported drownings associated with practicing breath-holding in or near water.

Always practice seated or lying down in a safe environment.


Practical Recommendations

If you’re interested in trying cold exposure:

Start slowly.

For most people:

  • Finish your shower with 30–60 seconds of cool water.
  • Gradually increase exposure over several weeks.
  • Focus on controlled breathing rather than enduring pain.
  • Stop immediately if you experience dizziness, chest pain, or severe discomfort.
  • View cold exposure as one component of an overall healthy lifestyle—not a substitute for evidence-based cancer treatment.

My Perspective

PeopleBeatingCancer has always emphasized therapies that are:

  • evidence-based
  • low toxicity
  • affordable
  • compatible with conventional oncology

Cold exposure appears to fit that philosophy—with appropriate caution.

The evidence suggests it may reduce inflammation, improve stress resilience, and enhance recovery.

What it does not show is that cold exposure treats cancer.

If future clinical trials confirm benefits for cancer survivors, cold therapy may become another useful tool alongside exercise, sleep, nutrition, stress management, and selected evidence-based supplements.

Until then, it’s best viewed as a potentially helpful lifestyle practice—not a miracle therapy.
