CoQ10 for Heart Disease- Prostate Cancer?

Share Button

By September the pain from the prostate cancer bone metastases were  negligible and I had been doing serious biking most of the summer.

Hello David.  Here’s my history: Diagnosed in 1992 at age 51 with prostate cancer with a PSA 14.2, I opted for External Beam Radiation Therapyin late 1993 when PSA had reached 29. and was treated in early 1994.  PSA dropped to 2.3.  It started to rise 6 yrs later.

On Lupron and Intermittant Lupron for 5 yrs, I developped all sorts of side effects. So, I looked for and found a Urologist who agreed to switch me to Cassodex 150mg.  PSA kept rising, but slowly.

At approx. PSA 22 in Aug 2012, the Uro decided to go back to Lupron. Two months later I developed major heart problems- angina so irritable that I could hardly go out of the house. Keep mind that I am a six by-pass recipient in 1994 and in 2006, I received 3 stents; I suspect the Lupron may be the cause of that.

In Jan. 2013, I realised that the pains I had been experiencing at the bottom of the pelvis were due to metastasis from my prostate cancer. By April it had spread to the left femur and I was starting to limp and of course to look for solutions.  I stumbled upon this National Cancer Institute web page:

Under Human/Clinical Studies you will find one study in which 3 women claimed cure from advanced breast cancer with mets, using 390 milligrams of CoQ10. I decided to pursue that course since it was familiar to me; I had been using  Ubiquinol for heart disease for 4 yrs.

I found somewhere that some urologists were recommending up to 600 milligrams of CoQ10, it made sense.  After all men are heftier than women so I went with the larger dose.  By september the pain from the metastases to my bones were  negligeable and,  I had been doing serious biking most of the summer.  My PSA had stopped climbing and now I’m really looking forward to the next PSA test in January.  That is my history.

Hi Leo-

While I’m sorry to read of both your prostate cancer (PCa) diagnosis and related side effects I am glad to read that combined evidence-based non-conventional therapies CoQ10 and exercise appear to put your PCa on a downward trend.

I supplement with CoQ10 myself as I too have chemotherapy-induced heart damage (chronic a-fib). I supplement with Life Extension Super Ubiquinol CoQ10 with Enhanced Mitochondrial Support.

Coenzyme Q10 – Topic Overview

“Heart failure- If you have heart failure, talk to your doctor before you take any supplement. There’s no strong evidence that vitamins or other supplements can help treat heart failure. They are used along with medical heart failure treatments, not instead of treatment.

But you may still hear about CoQ10 supplements and heart failure. CoQ10 has not been shown definitely to relieve heart failure symptoms. Only some of the studies of coenzyme Q10 showed that it helps heart failure symptoms.1

Cancer- In 1961, scientists saw that people with cancer had little CoQ10 in their blood. They found low CoQ10 blood levels in people with myeloma, lymphoma, and cancers of the breast, lung, prostate, pancreas, colon, kidney, and head and neck. Some research has suggested that CoQ10 helps the immune system and may be useful as a secondary treatment for cancer.”

Omega-3, CoQ10 May Benefit Prostate Health, Study Shows

“Omega-3 fatty acid eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) may significantly reduce prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels in normal healthy men, according to an Iranian study published in the British Journal of Nutrition. (Study published online November 30, 2012, ahead of print.) PSA levels are considered a marker for prostate cancer risk.

The randomized, double-blind study on 504 healthy men set out to determine whether omega-3 fatty acids, omega-6 fatty acids, or CoQ10 could alter serum PSA levels. For 12 weeks, subjects were randomly assigned to a dietary supplement of two capsules, twice daily, of placebo, omega-3 (1.2 g of EPA omega-3 and 0.72 g of docosahexaenoic acid, or DHA, omega-3 per capsule), omega-6 fatty acids (600 mg of gamma-linolenic acid, or GLA, per capsule), and CoQ10 (100 mg per capsule). Serum levels of PSA, EPA, DHA, GLA, lipid profile, and reproductive hormones were measured.

According to researchers, EPA significantly reduced serum PSA levels by 30% from baseline, and CoQ10 supplementation reduced serum PSA levels by 33%. However, supplementation with GLA significantly increased PSA levels by 15%.

The omega-3 supplement used in the study was Epax 5500 TG, an omega-3 triglyceride concentrate from omega-3 supplier Epax AS (Oslo, Norway). The CoQ10 was the Nutri Q10 brand.”

Your mention of a-fib leads me to mention my use of magnesium to control my irregular heart beat. Life Extension Extend-Release Magnesium three or four times a day. Might help with a-fib?

    Hi Leo-

Someone mentioned mag. for Afib just the other day. Thanks.
