Immunotherapy has transformed cancer treatment. Drugs known as immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs), including nivolumab, pembrolizumab, atezolizumab, and others, have helped many patients achieve durable responses against cancers such as melanoma, lung cancer, kidney cancer, bladder cancer, and lymphoma.
However, unlike chemotherapy, immunotherapy works by stimulating the immune system. In some patients, this immune activation can become excessive and trigger inflammation in healthy tissues. These complications are known as immune-related adverse events (irAEs).
The good news is that growing evidence suggests that several integrative oncology therapies may help patients manage symptoms, improve quality of life, and maintain physical function during immunotherapy treatment.
Importantly, integrative therapies should complement—not replace—conventional medical management of immune-related adverse events.
