Is my girlfriend’s cancer curable? Liver cancer that metastasized from colon cancer? Concerned Caregiver
Dear Concerned Caregiver-
While there are no absolutes in oncology, your girlfriend has a steep hill to climb in the months and years ahead. My reply to you is less about curability or incurability and more about her length and quality of life. Your therapy plan will directly affect her quality and quantity of life.
Let me outline your challenges and a sort of therapy plan for you both. There is a lot I don’t know, of course, but in my experience, this is what will give your girlfriend the longest, highest-quality life going forward.
Colorectal Cancer- Need to Know- Study the info in this post. Learning the basics will help you both feel more in control, make better decisions and ask your oncologist better questions.
Your girlfriend must get her mind and body in shape for the therapies that she will undergo in the coming months. Prehabilitate, enhance her gut microbiome and undergo as many courses of IVC as you can- all before undergoing any conventional therapies.
Prehab, gut health, and IVC have been shown to enhance therapies while reducing side effects. You will need to enhance her therapies while reducing her side effects.
Nutritional supplementation before, during and after conventional therapies is a controversial issue. I encourage you to read the research, talk to your oncologist and make the best decisions you can for your girlfriend.
Whether its a supplement called AHCC, discussed above, or the supplements outlined in the “need to know” post, I believe supplementation can be an important component of colon cancer therapy.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids
Research suggests omega-3 supplementation may reduce inflammation, help maintain body weight, and improve treatment tolerance.
Vitamin D
Vitamin D plays a major role in immune regulation and tumor growth control. Deficiency is common in colorectal cancer patients and should be evaluated clinically.
Curcumin
Curcumin demonstrates anti-inflammatory and tumor-modulating properties and may improve chemotherapy sensitivity.
Medicinal Mushrooms
Compounds from mushrooms such as turkey tail, reishi, and maitake may enhance immune response during cancer treatment.
As you can see from the above, I haven’t spent much time on conventional/traditional therapies. I leave this to your conventional oncology team. I will say that testing and diagnostic information can help you both make decisions going forward.
There is a lot that this reply can’t cover. As I said above, there is just too much I don’t know about your situation. Feel free to ask me questions as you two face your ongoing health challenges.
Good luck,
David Emerson
