Newly-Diagnosed Multiple Myeloma Patients Don’t Know What They Don’t Know- MM CC Can Help-

If you were given a Multiple Myeloma diagnosis would you know what to ask your oncologist? I believe that MMers don’t know what they don’t know. By doing several small things, MM patients can easily beat the odds.

I didn’t know what to ask my oncologist when I was first diagnosed. Neither I nor my wife had even heard of a cancer called Multiple Myeloma when I was first diagnosed.

  • Pre-Habilitate
  • Consult with a MM specialist
  • Add evidence-based, non-conventional (nutrition, supplementation, lifestyle) therapies to your regimen

These three tips can put you way beyond the 5-7 year average life expectancy of newly diagnosed MM patients.

Multiple Myeloma Mind Map

It took me years of living with MM to understand not only MM as a cancer but understand oncology specifically and conventional medicine in general.

My name is David Emerson. I am a long-term MM survivor and MM cancer coach. I now know what MMers should ask their oncologists. In most cases I can encourage the MMer to ask the question as well as give the MMer the study that discusses the question.

And I know what MM patients probably don’t want to ask their oncologists. Whether you want to discuss an issue with your oncologist or just with me, I can help.

Scroll down the page, post a question or comment and I will reply to you ASAP.

Coaching Program Gives Cancer Patients a VOICE in Their Care

“In his Values and Options in Cancer Care (VOICE) study, Dr Epstein and his group offered an in-office training course for physicians…In addition, the researchers trained coaches to help patients identify the most important questions to ask their oncologists during an upcoming office visit…

The results showed that the intervention resulted in clinically and statistically significant improvements in the primary physician-patient communication end point

“We found that the intervention actually did make a difference in terms of communication,” Dr Epstein said…

Patients were also coached to think about what they want their doctor to know about them, to better help their care. The prompt list offered these suggestions:

  • I want to know the pros (benefits) and cons (side effects) of the treatments I’m getting.
  • I can deal with the truth about my condition.
  • I don’t know what to tell my family.
  • I worry that I’m going to suffer.
  • I worry that if I stop treatment, you might not be my doctor anymore.
  • I hate being dependent on others.
  • I would rather not discuss how much longer I have left.
  • When the time comes, I’d prefer to die at home.
  • I am afraid of dying.”

My wife was diagnosed with stage 2 MM back in mid November of 2018. She is now into her third week of a clinical trial at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. Her drug regimine in the study is Ixasomib, daratumunab, Revlimid, and dexamethazone. She gets the Dara and the dex by IV at Mayo Clinic once a week. She also gets a Zometa via IV once a month. She was also prescribed supplements along with anti-nauseous meds if needed. She was told she can eat a normal healthy meal but to stay away from grapefruit but can eat other citrus. Can you give me a list of maybe a dozen supplements or superfoods she should be eating?
So far she seems to be handling the treatment fairly well. She does have trouble sleeping after the treatment. Yesterday,, the day after her weekly Dara and Dex IV followed immediately by her monthly IV of Zometa to help strengthen her bones she broke out in hives that for the most part went away after taking a warm bath using epsam salts..
My wife is 60 and retired and I was semi-retired when she was diagnosed but have taken a leave of absence from my part-time job as a truck driver at least until her visits to Mayo Clinic go from once a week to twice a week 9 weeks into the study. I want to make sure I am doing everything I can for her. She is a tuff person and if anyone can beat this it is her. She also was treated for Rhumatoid Arthritis when she was a child and Aldo has a thyroid condition which she has been been taking meds to control for the last 10 years. and so she already has two auto-immune disorders against her but has always eaten healthy and exercised. Thank you for your time. .

    Hi Sue-

The two best ways to communicate are either through the site the way we are exchanging emails now or by emailing me at David.PeopleBeatingCancer@gmail.com.

I will send you the introduction of the MM ebook to give you an idea of what is in the ebook. In addition I will include the introduction to the MM Cancer coaching program. The ebook is included in the program.

Have you been diagnosed with MM? If so, what stage? Are you dealing with any symptoms such as bone or kidney damage or anemia?

    Hi Peter-

Yes I have info about foods and supplements that starve MM. My experience is that MMers must pursue the spectrum of evidence-based therapies in order to manage their MM. By spectrum I mean the best of both conventional and non-conventional therapies.

What was your stage at diagnosis? Have you undergone induction therapy such as RVD (rev/vel/dex)? Have you had an ASCT? I don’t mean to sound nosey. The more I understand your situation the more info I can provide.
