The leading cause of legal blindness, age-related macular degeneration affects more than 10 million Americans — more than cataracts and glaucoma combined

Aggressive, high-dose chemotherapy and radiation have left with with a host of long-term and late stage multiple myeloma side effects. Eye-sight is one of the body’s senses that you really don’t understand how important it is to your daily quality of life until you lose it. At least I didn’t.

I don’t suffer from AMD. I developed cataracts in both eyes while undergoing several months of aggressive chemotherapy and high-dose steroids. Over a few months time my cataracts went from not noticeable to “I can’t drive on a sunny day!” kind of thing.
Cataracts aren’t as serious a AMD but losing my site temporarily scared me enough to research the issue and work to keep my eyes as healthy as possible for the rest of my life.

Combine my eye experiences with my routine practice of Vitamin D3 , lutein/zeaxanthin (Bausch and Lomb PreserVision AREDS 2 Formula ) supplementation discussed below for the prevention of AMD and here I am blogging about the benefit of Vitamin D3 , lutein/zeaxanthin to your eye heath.

The studies linked and excerpted below don’t prove that Vitamin D3, lutein/zeaxanthin (Bausch and Lomb PreserVision AREDS 2 Formula ) are guaranteed to prevent AMD but the supplementation is the cheapest, easiest therapy that you will find to reduce your risk of AMD.

Vitamin D3 , lutein/zeaxanthin (Bausch and Lomb PreserVision AREDS 2 Formula ) may simply slow AMD but add years of quality-of-life. I supplement with Bausch & Lomb PreserVision AREDS 2 Formula Eye Vitamin and Mineral Supplement (Bausch and Lomb PreserVision AREDS 2 Formula ) because this is the only formula evaluated and approved by ConsumerLab.com an independent testing service. The formula used in B&L’s Eye supplement is the same used in the successful AREDS 2 study. I supplement with Life Extension Vitamin D3 (1,000 x 2 daily), also because this brand has been evaluated and approved by ConsumerLab.com.

If you are at risk of AMD or have been diagnosed with early stage AMD please read the studies linked below and begin supplementing with B&L PreserVision AREDS Formula EYE Supplement (Bausch and Lomb PreserVision AREDS 2 Formula ) to begin preserving your eye site now.

Effect of supplemental lutein and zeaxanthin on serum, macular pigmentation, and visual performance in patients with early age-related macular degeneration.

PURPOSE:To compare the 2-year effect of multiple doses of lutein/zeaxanthin on serum, macular pigmentation, and visual performance on patients with early age-related macular degeneration (AMD)…

METHODS:Serum concentration of lutein/zeaxanthin, macular pigment optical density (MPOD), visual functions including best-spectacle corrected visual acuity (BCVA), contrast sensitivity (CS)flash recovery time (FRT), and vision-related quality of life (VFQ25) was quantified

CONCLUSIONS: Long-term lutein supplementation could increase serum lutein concentration, MPOD, and visual sensitivities of early AMD patients. 10 mg lutein daily might be an advisable long-term dosage for early AMD treatment.”

Vitamin D may play key role in preventing macular degeneration

“Vitamin D has been studied extensively in relation to bone health as well as cancer. Now, a team led by a researcher at the University at Buffalo has discovered that vitamin D may play a significant role in eye health, specifically in the possible prevention of age-related macular degeneration, or AMD, among women who are more genetically prone to developing the sight-damaging disease…

This is not a study that can, alone, prove a causal association, but it does suggest that if you’re at high genetic risk for AMD, having a sufficient vitamin D status might help reduce your risk.

The leading cause of legal blindness, macular degeneration affects more than 10 million Americans — more than cataracts and glaucoma combined — according to the American Macular Degeneration Foundation. The disease affects a person’s central vision, which is needed for common tasks such as reading and driving. The effect is similar to that of a rain drop on the center of a camera lens…”

Age-related Macular Degeneration & Skin Cancer Therapies

I am a cancer survivor. Side effects have damaged my eyes. Aggressive chemo has increased my risk of skin cancer. So you can bet I take the vitamin and mineral supplement that I think protects my skin and eyes

The sun giveth and the sun taketh away. Most of us love sunshine but then many of us will experience the negative effects of sunshine, aka U.V. radiation, as we age in the form of non-melanoma skin cancer and/or age-related macular degeneration.

The solution? Inexpensive nutritional Lutein, Zeaxanthin supplement to slow age-related macular degeneration and reduce skin cancers. Read on.

Numerous studies document the size and severity of the eye disease called age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in the U.S. – more than 10 million people on their way to blindness due to AMD. The difficulty for AMD patients however, is the fact that there are no conventional therapies to cure AMD.

Lutein, Zeaxanthin supplement  have been shown to reduce the negative effects of UV radiation on skin.

Lutein, Zeaxanthin supplement are not a cure for AMD or skin cancer. But they do slow the progress of AMD and they do help protect your skin. I supplement with Bausch and Lomb PreserVision AREDS 2 Formula Eye Vitamin and Mineral Supplement because this formula has all the antioxidants used in the study linked below  coupled with Lutein, Zeaxanthin supplement. This formula has been tested and approved by Consumerlab.com, an independent testing service.

Eye Candy? Scientists Debate the Value of Lutein Supplements

“The Claim: Lutein, a plant antioxidant, is critical for maintaining good vision and may even help keep brains healthy as they age
The Verdict: A large government study found that a daily cocktail of dietary supplements including lutein reduced the risk of a chronic eye disease progressing to an advanced stage.
Other studies suggest that lutein can improve vision in healthy adults and improve cognition with age, but scientists say more research is needed.Lutein and its close cousin zeaxanthin (pronounced zee-ah-zan-thin) are nutrients found in a variety of foods, including spinach, kale, collard greens and egg yolks…When consumed, the two nutrients, which are yellow-orange colored, are deposited in the center of the retina, where they protect sensitive eye cells from incoming light, says Emily Y. Chew, deputy clinical director at the federal National Eye Institute. The nutrients also are believed to serve as antioxidants in the eye, protecting cells from being damaged by a chemical reaction called oxidation, she adds. Some scientists believe lutein may also provide similar protection to brain cells…The two pigments were tested in a federally funded 4,203-person study, published earlier this year in the Journal of the American Medical Association.  When taken along with
  • vitamins C and E,
  • zinc and
  • copper,

the nutrients helped prevent progression of an eye disease called macular degeneration in people who already have it, says Dr. Chew, co-author of the study. As a result, the NEI added lutein and zeaxanthin to its recommendation for daily supplements for macular-degeneration patients, which it calls AREDS2…

Lutein + Zeaxanthin and Omega-3 Fatty Acids for Age-Related Macular DegenerationThe Age-Related Eye Disease Study 2 (AREDS2) Randomized Clinical Trial

“Oral supplementation with the Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) formulation (antioxidant vitamins C and E, beta carotene, and zinc) has been shown to reduce the risk of progression to advanced age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Observational data suggest that increased dietary intake of lutein + zeaxanthin (carotenoids), omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (docosahexaenoic acid [DHA] + eicosapentaenoic acid [EPA]), or both might further reduce this risk…”

The list of health benefits of omega-3 fatty acids (fish oil) listed below may seem endless. And it might seem impossible for daily dose of omega-3 fatty acids to provide all the of the health benefits below but its not.

I’m a long-term cancer survivor living with chemobrain, chemo-induced heart damage, radiation-induced nerve damage and a risk of treatment related secondary cancers. I believe that omega 3 fatty acid supplementation helps me maintain my health each and every day.

I take one capsule daily of Life Extension Super Omega 3 EPA/DHA with Sesame Lignans and Olive Fruit to insure all I get all of the health benefits below and I encourage you to do so as well.
