Recently Diagnosed or Relapsed? Stop Looking For a Miracle Cure, and Use Evidence-Based Therapies To Enhance Your Treatment and Prolong Your Remission

Multiple Myeloma an incurable disease, but I have spent the last 25 years in remission using a blend of conventional oncology and evidence-based nutrition, supplementation, and lifestyle therapies from peer-reviewed studies that your oncologist probably hasn't told you about.

Myeloma – Curcumin – Symptoms, Side Effects

“However, chemotherapy only has a limited success with severe side effects, especially causing damage to normal tissues such as bone marrow, gastrointestine, heart, liver, renal, neuron, and auditory tissues, etc.”

When I first read about curcumin, I learned about an evidence-based multiple myeloma therapy that was also non-toxic. I was ecstatic. Numerous studies, in vitro, in vivo, in humans, have shown that curcumin, a non-toxic therapy,  not only kills MM but also synergizes to enhance the MM killing ability of both velcade and revlimid.

Skip ahead 10-15 years…I’ve come to realize that MM patients and survivors face challenges throughout their lives living with MM. It’s not just about multiple myeloma cytotoxicity…

The over-arching challenge multiple myeloma patients and survivors face is that multiple myeloma therapy, FDA approved, standard-of-care chemotherapy that is, too often cause the same health problems that their incurable blood cancer does. MM side effects are often indistinguishable from MM symptoms.

Newly diagnosed multiple myeloma patients believe that their oncologists are prescribing multiple myeloma therapies that will give them years of survival. At least I did when I was diagnosed with MM in early 1994.

Studies indicate that even oncologists might not know chemotherapy regimens that cause MM side effects that look like MM symptoms.

To complicate the life of the average MM patient, conventional MM oncology focuses on the cure in the cure vs. control debate. While we all want to cure our incurable blood cancer, the fact is that this is short-term thinking.

By prescribing the newly diagnosed MM patient so much toxicity in the beginning of his/her life as a MM patient, oncology is condemning that patient to  a life of short, long-term and late stage side effects followed by multi-drug resistance (MDR) and death.

For example, if the MM patient experiences bone damage when h/she is diagnosed, the induction therapy prescribed may include dexamethasone, a steroid shown to weaken bones.

If the MM patient is suffering from kidney damage upon diagnosis, h/she may be prescribed revlimid aka lenalidomide, a chemotherapy known to cause kidney damage.

Chemotherapy in general and particularly the high-dose, aggressive chemotherapy that comes with an autologous stem cell transplant can damage bone marrow temporarily and possibly permanently.

There are two solutions to the general problem of toxic chemotherapy regimens that cause as much damage as not:

  • When it comes to conventional MM therapy, less toxicity is more, and
  • Nutritional supplementation such as curcumin to heal our bone marrow, bones, kidneys, etc. while it enhances toxic chemotherapy and fights our blood cancer itself-

Preventive Effect of Curcumin Against Chemotherapy-Induced Side-Effects.

“However, chemotherapy only has a limited success with severe side effects, especially causing damage to normal tissues such as bone marrow, gastrointestine, heart, liver, renal, neuron, and auditory tissues, etc. The side-effects limit clinical outcome of chemotherapy and lower patients’ quality of life, and even make many patients discontinue the chemotherapy. Thus, there is a need to explore effective adjuvant strategies to prevent and reduce the chemotherapy-induced side effects…

In the present article, we review the preventive effect of curcumin against:

  • chemotherapy-induced myelosuppression,
  • gastrointestinal toxicity,
  • cardiotoxicity,
  • hepatotoxicity,

Curcumin induces cell death of the main molecular myeloma subtypes, particularly the poor prognosis subgroups

“The present study demonstrated that curcumin was able to induce cell death of HMCLs belonging to the main MM subtypes. Taking into account myeloma molecular heterogeneity, we found that most sensitive HMCLs were spread out over the t(14;16) and t(4;14) subgroups…

All these findings might support clinical trials including curcumin in association with standard therapy, as chemoresistance remains a major challenge in myeloma treatment…”

Effects of a Curcumin-Based Supplementation in Asymptomatic Subjects With Low Bone Density: A Preliminary 24-week Supplement Study

“Osteopenia is a chronic bone condition characterized by decreased calcification, density, or bone mass that, if untreated, can lead to osteoporosis and bone fractures…In this study, we evaluated the efficacy, in term of changes in bone density, and safety of an oral formulation based on turmeric phytosome (Meriva®), in subjects suffering from low bone density

Results: The bone density of the heel measured by the Sahara densitometer remarkably improved in the Meriva®-supplemented group, with a significant decrease of ultrasounds transmission values at week 12 (-18.4%) and at week 24 (-21.0%), compared with baseline values… Last, no safety and tolerability issues were reported during the observational period.

Conclusions: This preliminary study suggests that a curcumin-based supplementation in combination with an appropriate lifestyle could be beneficial in the prevention and management of osteopenia…”

The Protective Role of Curcumin in Cardiovascular Diseases

In this review, we focused mainly on the effects of curcumin on the cardiovascular system. The antioxidant effects of curcumin have been shown to attenuate adriamycin-induced cardiotoxicity and may prevent diabetic cardiovascular complications.

The anti-thrombotic, anti-proliferative, and anti-inflammatory effects of curcumin and the effect of curcumin in decreasing the serum cholesterol level may protect against the pathological changes occurring with atherosclerosis…”

I have recently been diagnosed with MM. I am a 75 y.o. female active playing Pickleball several hours 3x week. I have a tumor in the small intestines that has been causing partial obstruction sporadically…surgery scheduled later this month. A recent MRI reveals innumerable enhancing T2 hyperintense bone lesions throughout the imaged portion (abdominal study) skeleton compatible metastatic disease. My blood work also reveals a protein spike prior to the MRI. Being referred to oncology no treatments yet.

    Hi Marlene-

I am sorry to read of your MM challenges. Do you have a question or is there anything I can do?

What brand and dose for mgus do you recommend

    Hi Rick-

The curcumin studies talk about “a time and dose dependent manner.” I take this to mean the more the better. I take a maintenance dose of curcumin because I am in remission. I read of many with active pre-mm or full mm that take 2,4,6,8 GRAMS a day. Dosing is complicated by many different brands having different formulas with different levels of absorption.

Ask the people in Beating Pre-Myeloma what they take. I’m curious…

    Thanks,

What brand and dosage of curcumin do. You recommend? Can you get curcumin alone or does it always come with turmeric?f

    Hi Eileen-

I will send you the supplementation guide. I have included a link to my info about curcumin- brand, dose, etc. Keep in mind that my daily dose is much less than those with active MM as I am in complete remission and intend to take curcumin for the rest of my life.

I don’t see a recommended supplement and dosing. I make my own Turmeric paste. Will that create the same positive results as taking just curcumin supplement? Thanks!

    Hi Ginny-

The challenge with curcumin dosing is that each formula (Dr.’s Best, LEF SuperBio, BCM 95, etc.) all provide different absorption rates. Everyone agrees that plain curcumin is difficult for the body to absorb. That is why everyone takes different brands of curcumin with enhanced bioavailability.

From what I read about turmeric paste aka golden paste, it affords much better absorption than basic curcumin but I have no idea how it compares to other curcumin formulas.

My personal opinion is to take several different supplements that studies have shown cause MM apoptosis (kill MM cells). This would be curcumin, resveratrol, green tea extract, and omega-3 fatty acids. I also recommend (and do myself) therapies such as whole body hyperthermia, exercise, anti-angiogenic nutrition, etc.

Lastly, I think this would be a great question for the online group Beating Pre-Myeloma. I would like to read what other pre-mm patients think, do.

I ready most of your guides but they don’t really sink in, till I have a question……..that is answered in them. I also have to find them……from the last time I studied any of them I apologize. I know I saved them a file. I would not pass your class if you were a class instructor. 😉

HI Kathryn- understanding MM is complicated. Take your time. The reason for both the MM CC program AND Beating Myeloma is because MM patients, survivors and caregivers are faced with so much. Keep asking any question. Thanks and hang in there.

    Hi Nanz-

The supplements guide is one of the 16 guides you received in the MM CC program. I will not take it personally if you have not read the MM CC program so I can send you another supplements guide if you want me to:-).
