Multiple Myeloma an incurable disease, but I have spent the last 25 years in remission using a blend of conventional oncology and evidence-based nutrition, supplementation, and lifestyle therapies from peer-reviewed studies that your oncologist probably hasn't told you about.

I am a long-term multiple myeloma survivor with live with a host of long-term and late stage side effects.

“Combination of chemotherapy and omega-3 fatty acids supplementation appears an effective strategy to enhance the clinical outcome of cancer (multiple myeloma) patients in their curative and palliative clinical trajectory.”

In addition, I live with an increased secondary cancer risk. Multiple Myeloma chemotherapy- induction therapy, an autologous stem cell transplant followed by maintenance therapy- greatly increases your risk of short, long-term and late stage side effects.

Research and experience has taught me that omega-3 fatty acids combined with multiple myeloma chemotherapy provides an integrative combination this is an essential non-conventional therapy for me. But in order to blog about this supplement I needed to provide evidence-based information to you, the reader.

The five studies linked and excerpted below state that omega 3 fatty acids provide an inexpensive, over-the-counter non-conventional therapy to heal your brain, heart, moods and more. As well as integrate with multiple myeloma chemotherapy.

I supplement daily with Life Extension Foundation Super Omega-3 Fatty Acids with EPA/DHA Sesame Lignans and Olive Extract.

I don’t take any conventional heart medications, I simply take evidence-based, non-conventional therapies for my chemotherapy-induced cardiomyopathy, atrial fibrillation, etc. And all indications tell me that my heart health is stable or improving.

I am both a multiple myeloma survivor and MM cancer coach. Have you been diagnosed with MM? If so, what symptoms are you experiencing? What stage were you diagnosed at?

Please scroll down the page, post a question or comment and I will reply to you ASAP.

Thank you,

David Emerson

Omega-3 fatty acid

“Common sources of plant oils containing the omega-3 ALA fatty acid include walnut, edible seeds, clary sage seed oil, algal oil, flaxseed oil, Sacha Inchi oil, Echium oil, and hemp oil, while sources of animal omega-3 EPA and DHA fatty acids include fish, fish oils, eggs from chickens fed EPA and DHA, squid oils, and krill oil…”

Omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA induce apoptosis and enhance drug sensitivity in multiple myeloma cells but not in normal peripheral mononuclear cells.

“Our study suggests that EPA and DHA induce selective cytotoxic effects in MM and increase sensitivity to bortezomib and calls for further exploration into a potential application of these n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in the therapy of MM…”

Omega-3 Fatty Acids and Depression: Scientific Evidence and Biological Mechanisms

“Although many other factors may also contribute to the rise in depression and for which effective (although not efficient) treatments already exist, dietary recommendations suggesting proper intake of omega-3 PUFA and dietary interventions including omega-3 PUFA supplement can result in substantial benefits for the general population…”

The Effects of Long-Chain Omega-3 Fish Oils and Multivitamins on Cognitive and Cardiovascular Function-

“Results:  Absolute increases in the red blood cell omega-3/6 ratio were associated with improvements in spatial working memory. The group receiving 6 g fish oil without the multivitamin displayed a significant decrease in aortic pulse pressure and aortic augmentation pressure, two measures of aortic blood pressure and aortic stiffness. Conclusions: Fish oil decreased aortic pulse pressure and augmentation pressure.”

Omega-3 Supplements and Cardiovascular Diseases

“In summary and in light of the current best evidence, we can conclude that omega-3 supplements might possibly confer cardiovascular benefits but their benefits will be minimal…”

17 Science-Based Benefits of Omega-3 Fatty Acids

  • Omega-3s Can Fight Depression and Anxiety
  • Omega-3s Can Improve Eye Health
    3. Omega-3s Can Promote Brain Health During Pregnancy and Early Life
  • 4. Omega-3s Can Improve Risk Factors For Heart Disease
  • These include:
    • Triglycerides: Omega-3s can cause a major reduction in triglycerides, usually in the range of 15–30% (25, 26, 27).
    • Blood pressure: Omega-3s can reduce blood pressure levels in people with high blood pressure (25, 28).
    • HDL-cholesterol: Omega-3s can raise HDL (the “good”) cholesterol levels (29, 30, 31)
    • Blood clots: Omega-3s can keep blood platelets from clumping together. This helps prevent the formation of harmful blood clots (32, 33).
    • Plaque: By keeping the arteries smooth and free from damage, omega-3s help prevent the plaque that can restrict and harden the arteries (34, 35).
    • Inflammation: Omega-3s reduce the production of some substances released during the inflammatory response (36, 37, 38).
  • 5. Omega-3s Can Reduce Symptoms of ADHD in Children
  • 6. Omega-3s Can Reduce Symptoms of Metabolic Syndrome

Metabolic syndrome is a collection of conditions.

It includes central obesity (belly fat), high blood pressure, insulin resistance, high triglycerides and low HDL levels.

It is a major public health concern, since it increases your risk of developing many other diseases. These include heart disease and diabetes (51).

Omega-3 fatty acids can reduce insulin resistance and inflammation, and improve heart disease risk factors in people with metabolic syndrome (52, 53, 54).

  • 7. Omega-3s Can Fight Inflammation

Inflammation is incredibly important. We need it to fight infections and repair damage in the body.

  • 8. Omega-3s Can Fight Autoimmune Diseases
  • 9. Omega-3s Can Improve Mental Disorders
  • 10. Omega-3s Can Fight Age-Related Mental Decline and Alzheimer’s Disease
  • 11. Omega-3s May Help Prevent Cancer

Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in the Western world, and omega-3 fatty acids have long been claimed to reduce the risk of certain cancers.

  • 12. Omega-3s Can Reduce Asthma in Children

Asthma is a chronic lung disease with symptoms like coughing, shortness of breath and wheezing.

  • 13. Omega-3s Can Reduce Fat in The Liver
  • 14. Omega-3s May Improve Bone and Joint Health

Osteoporosis and arthritis are two common disorders that affect the skeletal system.

Studies indicate that omega-3s can improve bone strength by increasing the amount of calcium in bones. This should lead to a reduced risk of osteoporosis (87, 88).

Omega-3s may also help with arthritis. Patients taking omega-3 supplements have reported reduced joint pain and increased grip strength (89, 90).

  • 15. Omega-3s Can Alleviate Menstrual Pain

Menstrual pain occurs in the lower abdomen and pelvis, and often radiates to the lower back and thighs.

  • 16. Omega-3 Fatty Acids May Improve Sleep

Good sleep is one of the foundations of optimal health.

  • 17. Omega-3 Fats Are Good For Your Skin

EPA also benefits the skin in several ways, including (101, 102):

    • Managing oil production in skin.
    • Managing hydration of the skin.
    • Preventing hyperkeratinization of hair follicles (the little red bumps often seen on upper arms).
    • Preventing premature ageing of the skin.
    • Preventing acne.

Omega-3s can also protect your skin from sun damage. EPA helps block the release of substances that eat away at the collagen in your skin after sun exposure (101).
