Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is one of the most difficult side effects of cancer therapy. Is ozone a CIPN Therapy for myeloma patients?

What is ozone therapy?

What are current therapies for chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy?

Pharmacological Therapies:

  • Duloxetine: This serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI) is currently the only medication recommended by the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) for treating CIPN. Clinical trials have demonstrated its efficacy in reducing neuropathic pain associated with chemotherapy.
  • Other Medications: While agents such as tricyclic antidepressants (e.g., amitriptyline), anticonvulsants (e.g., gabapentin, pregabalin), and topical treatments like capsaicin cream or lidocaine patches are commonly used for neuropathic pain, their effectiveness specifically for CIPN is not well-established. ASCO guidelines do not currently recommend these treatments for CIPN due to insufficient evidence.

Non-Pharmacological Therapies:

  • Physical Therapy: Engaging in physical therapy can help manage CIPN symptoms by improving strength, balance, and functional abilities. Exercises focusing on stretching, resistance training, and balance may alleviate discomfort and enhance quality of life.
  • Complementary Therapies: Some patients find relief through acupuncture, which may help reduce pain and improve nerve function. However, more research is needed to confirm its efficacy in CIPN.
  • Topical Treatments: Applying capsaicin cream or lidocaine patches directly to affected areas can provide localized pain relief for some individuals. These treatments may help interrupt pain signals from peripheral nerves.

Lifestyle Modifications:

  • Exercise: Regular physical activity, including walking and strength training, can improve circulation, reduce neuropathic symptoms, and enhance overall well-being. It’s advisable to consult with a healthcare provider before starting any exercise regimen.
  • Vitamins and Supplements: While some patients consider vitamins or supplements to manage neuropathy, there is limited scientific evidence supporting their effectiveness in treating CIPN. It’s important to discuss any supplement use with your healthcare team to ensure safety and avoid potential interactions.

I live with many side effects from my conventional MM therapies.

CIPN is a difficult side effect with few effective therapies. I have written about CIPN therapies many times on PeopleBeatingCancer over the years. I try to provide as much info to CIPN sufferers as I can.

Long-Term Effects of Ozone Treatment in Patients with Persistent Numbness and Tingling Secondary to Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy. A Retrospective Study

Numbness and tingling secondary to chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) are frequent side effects that limit chemotherapy treatment and quality of life. Successful treatments for CIPN are limited. This preliminary report shows the potential long-term effects of ozone treatment in the management of persistent numbness and tingling secondary to CIPN…

Results:

After ozone treatment, 47% of patients experienced a decrease in the grade of CIPN-toxicity (P = .016), and 67% of patients reported a decrease in numbness and tingling ≥50% (P = .002). These effects were maintained at 3- and 6- months after the end of O3T.
Conclusions:

In this retrospective report, patients with persistent numbness and tingling secondary to CIPN showed clinically relevant and long-term improvements after ozone treatment. The magnitude and duration of the observed effects merit further research and support our ongoing clinical trials…
