Prostate Cancer First Visit Questions?

Prostate cancer first visit questions can be overwhelming. You may feel anxious, confused, angry, or unsure where to begin. Newly diagnosed prostate cancer patients often don’t know what they don’t know.

I used artificial intelligence to generate the prostate cancer first visit questions below. Honestly, A.I. does a strong job organizing key ideas. The issues below cover a lot of ground. Don’t be surprised if your oncologist gives you less time than you want or gives you brief replies.

That said, I want to add a few important cautions.

Remember that the “cautions” are a function of my long-term cancer survivor experiences.

Cautions

  1. Your oncologist matters (oncologist or urologist?).
Your relationship with your oncologist can last for years. You must feel comfortable with this person. You need trust, communication, and shared goals.

  2. Understand your oncologist’s treatment philosophy.
Conventional oncology often focuses on aggressive disease control. Make sure you understand the risks, benefits, and long-term consequences of recommended therapies.

  3. Integrative therapies are often overlooked.
Many oncologists receive limited training in nutrition, lifestyle medicine, and mind-body therapies. These can play important supportive roles.

  4. Conventional oncology is only one part of survivorship.
Physical, emotional, and lifestyle factors all influence outcomes and quality of life.

I’ve linked the video below because it explains the different types of treatment that you will purse initially. The video is not about “questions” but it gives you valuable information that will help you understand your prostate cancer appointments.

Most Important Questions to Ask at the First Prostate Cancer Oncology Visit

1. Understanding the Diagnosis (Foundation Questions)

These questions determine the type and aggressiveness of prostate cancer and guide treatment decisions.

  • What is my Gleason score or Grade Group?
  • What stage is my cancer and what does that mean?
  • What is my PSA level and PSA trend?
  • How aggressive is my cancer considered?
  • Has the cancer spread outside the prostate?
  • Do I need additional imaging such as MRI, PSMA PET scan, or bone scan?
  • Am I considered low, intermediate, or high-risk?

Why this matters:
Prostate cancer varies widely from slow-growing disease requiring monitoring to aggressive disease requiring immediate treatment.

2. Prognosis and Treatment Goals

Patients deserve clarity about expectations.

  • Is my prostate cancer considered curable?
  • Is active surveillance an option for me?
  • What is the goal of treatment: cure, disease control, or symptom management?
  • What is my prognosis with treatment versus monitoring?
  • How urgent is it to begin treatment?

3. Treatment Options and Strategy

These questions help patients understand the overall plan.

  • What treatment options are available?
  • Should I consider active surveillance, surgery, radiation, hormone therapy, or combination therapy?
  • Why do you recommend this specific treatment?
  • What are the alternatives?
  • Should I seek a second opinion?

4. Surgery Questions (If Surgery Is Planned)

  • Do I need radical prostatectomy?
  • Is nerve-sparing surgery possible?
  • What are the risks of urinary incontinence or erectile dysfunction?
  • What is the expected recovery timeline?
  • Will lymph nodes be removed?

5. Radiation, Hormone Therapy, or Other Treatments

Radiation Therapy

  • Which type of radiation is recommended (external beam, SBRT, brachytherapy, proton therapy)?
  • How many treatments will I need?
  • What are short-term and long-term side effects?
  • How might radiation affect urinary, bowel, or sexual function?
  • Hormone Therapy (Androgen Deprivation Therapy – ADT)
  • Will I need hormone therapy?
  • How long would I receive ADT?
  • What are potential side effects such as fatigue, weight gain, bone loss, or cardiovascular risks?
  • Are there ways to reduce these side effects?
  • Newer or Advanced Therapies
  • Am I eligible for targeted therapy, immunotherapy, or radiopharmaceutical therapy?
  • When are these therapies typically used?

6. Side Effects and Quality of Life

  • This topic is often under-discussed but extremely important for prostate cancer survivors.
  • What short-term side effects should I expect?
  • What long-term or permanent side effects are possible?
  • How likely are urinary incontinence or erectile dysfunction?
  • Will treatment affect testosterone levels?
  • What symptoms require urgent medical attention?

7. Lifestyle, Integrative, and Supportive Care

  • Many oncologists welcome these discussions.
  • Are there diet or exercise recommendations?
  • Are supplements safe during treatment?
  • Are integrative therapies helpful for side effects?
  • Should I consult a nutritionist, pelvic floor therapist, or survivorship specialist?
  • What lifestyle changes may reduce recurrence risk?

8. Genetics and Family Risk

  • Should I undergo genetic testing (BRCA, ATM, CHEK2, or others)?
  • Could my prostate cancer be hereditary?
  • Should family members be tested?

9. Clinical Trials

  • These are frequently overlooked and sometimes provide access to cutting-edge therapies.
  • Am I eligible for clinical trials?
  • Would participation improve my treatment options?

10. Logistics and Practical Planning

  • These questions help reduce future stress.
  • How often will I need follow-up appointments?
  • Will treatment affect my ability to work or exercise?
  • Who should I contact if side effects occur?
  • Are there financial or insurance support resources?

Bonus: Questions Many Survivors Say They Wish They Asked

  • How will treatment affect long-term bone, cardiovascular, cognitive, and metabolic health?
  • What survivorship monitoring will I need?
  • What symptoms suggest recurrence?
  • What can I do to lower recurrence risk?
