Myeloma, Inflammation, Arthritis, Psoriasis

Inflammation, multiple myeloma, arthritis, and psoriasis are all linked by curcumin, omega-3 fatty acids, wobenzyme and vitamin D3. The problem is, I don’t know how they are all linked…

I haven’t figured it all out yet. Multiple myeloma, inflammation, arthritis and psoriasis are all connected. I believe this because I had them all and I don’t anymore. I am a multiple myeloma survivor who should have knee pain, psoriasis and multiple myeloma. Yet, I don’t.

It’s not just me. The studies linked and excerpted below talk about the same issues. All of these health issues are healed by omega-3 fatty acids, curcumin, Wobenzyme, and vitamin D3. At least they have for me.

  • I was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in early 1994. I reached complete remission in 4/99.
  • I have had psoriasis skin patches ever since I can remember.
  • At my last doctor’s appointment, my PCP told me I had arthritis in my knees (no pain…).

Most importantly, I’ve been supplementing with curcumin, omega-3’s, vitamin D3 and Wobenzyme for more than 10 years now. All of these supplements are documented to be anti-MM or shown to enhance bone health. I was pretty happy to remain in complete remission from my MM so I continued to supplement.

My last PCP appointment got me thinking about my lack of arthritis pain. I am 60. Most people I know suffer from arthritis pain. My knees should be killing me and they’re not.

There are plenty of studies that connect two of the dots- inflammation –to–MM or inflammation –to –arthritis. Even inflammation —-to—-psoriasis.

But I can’t find a study that connects all of the dots…

To really complicate things, the first article linked below, if I understand it, says that inflammation causes cancer yet the article calls the relationship between the two “a nonlinear relationship.” Whatever that means…

Are MM, arthritis, and psoriasis all symptoms of high inflammation? Now that I’m in complete remission with no arthritis pain or patchy skin, have I reached some sort of inflammatory balance?

If you can answer these questions or even if you can offer a theory, scroll down the page, post a question or comment and I will reply to you ASAP.

7.2. Multiple Myeloma and Inflammation: A Nonunique Connection

However, the relationship between inflammation and cancer and between cytokines and neoplasms is certainly less linear and defined than previously thought, and it is very different than that observed for other pathophysiological conditions such as ageing [, ].

The immune system can defend against tumours, and several cytokines predict long-term survival for subjects with advanced cancer.

Treatment with omega-3 fatty acids has been associated with improvement in some outcome measures in rheumatoid arthritis…they do provide a compelling justification for curcumin’s use as a dietary adjunct to conventional therapy”

It may sound odd for a cancer survivor and cancer coach to be writing about arthritis (art). Art and cancer have two important things in common.

  1. Both of these diseases are caused by inflammation and
  2. both of these diseases are managed by curcumin and omega 3 fatty acids

I hope you noticed that I used the word managed and not cured. Too many articles on the Internet talk about curing this disease and that disease. While omega 3’s and curcumin may eliminate your art completely I find it more reasonable to talk about the studies below that cite fish oil and curcumin to work synergistically with conventional therapies. This integrative approach to therapy is the future of cancer therapy as well.

I have supplemented with Life Extension Super Omega 3 for years now. In addition I have been taking Life Extension Super BioCurcumin for years as well. Both formulas have been evaluated and approved by ConsumerLab.com, an independent testing service. I take these supplements because studies confirm their benefit to both my brain and heart function.

Omega-3 fatty acids in rheumatoid arthritis: an overview.

“To review background, pharmacological properties, mechanisms of action, and published clinical experience using omega-3 fatty acids in rheumatoid arthritis…

Omega-3 fatty acids are superior with respect to placebo in improving some outcome measures, and decrease the long-term requirements for nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs…

Treatment with omega-3 fatty acids has been associated with improvement in some outcome measures in rheumatoid arthritis….”

Efficacy of Turmeric Extracts and Curcumin for Alleviating the Symptoms of Joint Arthritis: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Clinical Trials

“We systemically evaluated all RCTs of turmeric extracts and curcumin for treating arthritis symptoms to elucidate the efficacy of curcuma for alleviating the symptoms of arthritis. Literature searches were conducted using 12 electronic databases, including PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Korean databases, Chinese medical databases, and Indian scientific database…

In conclusion, although the studies used in this meta-analysis do not have sufficient number of subjects to permit a definitive recommendation for the use of curcumin as a treatment for arthritis, they do provide a compelling justification for its use as a dietary adjunct to conventional therapy. Furthermore, they also provide sufficient evidence to support larger clinical trials that could eventually lead to its acceptance as a standard therapy for many forms of arthritis and possibly other inflammatory conditions.”

Evidence-based, Non-Toxic Knee Osteoarthritis Relief-

Wobenzym is comparable to the NSAID diclofenac in relieving pain and increasing function in adults with moderate-to-severe painful knee Osteoarthritis and reduces reliance on analgesic medication. Wobenzym is associated with fewer adverse events and, therefore, may be appropriate for long-term use.”

Your knees are killing you when you work out, play tennis or golf- sometimes they even hurt when you walk up stairs. Your osteoarthritis is effecting your life in a serious way. The article linked below talks about the FDA’s warning about NSAIDs increasing your risk of heart attack and stroke.

What do you do? Sit around all day??? No. Take Wobenzym N  to improve your

  • joint health
  • blood health
  • and lower your risk of cancer

All that from an enzyme supplement? Yes. The second study linked and excerpted below indicates that Wobenzym N relieves pain as well as NSAIDS but without the risk of negative side effects. As a long-term cancer survivor I supplement with Wobenzym N to reduce my risk of blood clots, reduce inflammation in addition to reducing the risk of my cancer returning.

Motrin IB, Aleve and Celebrex increase cardiovascular risks

“The Food and Drug Administration warned last week that the risk of heart attack and stroke from widely used painkillers that include Motrin IB, Aleve and Celebrex but not aspirin was greater than it previously had said. But what does that mean for people who take them?…”

The Safety and Efficacy of an Enzyme Combination in Managing Knee Osteoarthritis Pain in Adults: A Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Trial

AbstractThis randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, and comparator-controlled trial evaluated the safety and efficacy of an enzyme combination, as Wobenzym, in adults with moderate-to-severe osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee. Adults () received Wobenzym, diclofenac (a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, NSAID), or placebo for 12 weeks.

Improvement in pain scores (Lequesne Functional Index) did not differ between subjects treated with Wobenzym or diclofenac, and both treatment groups improved compared to placebo ().

Wobenzym is comparable to the NSAID diclofenac in relieving pain and increasing function in adults with moderate-to-severe painful knee OA and reduces reliance on analgesic medication. Wobenzym is associated with fewer adverse events and, therefore, may be appropriate for long-term use.”

Conclusions-The enzyme combination Wobenzym may be as effective as the NSAID diclofenac in the management of chronic OA of the knee when administered for 12 weeks, with a similar safety profile to placebo, although further study is needed. Use of Wobenzym reduced the reliance on paracetamol (acetaminophen) for additional pain relief. Wobenzym may be a safe and effective option for the daily management of long-term joint pain.

Vitamin D Improves Osteoarthritis Knee Pain

Results-At 12 months, osteoarthritis knee pain had decreased in the vitamin D group … whereas in the placebo group, it increased…

Most everyone I know with knee pain (aka osteoarthritis of the knee) eventually has his/her knee (s) replaced. Most played some sport in high school and college so they expect knee pain. Some may have even sustained trauma to their knees and lived with the knee pain when they were athletes.

Their doctors tell them to comeback to get their knees replaced when the pain is unbearable. Meaning artificial joints are improving all the time. So putting off replacing your knees will get you a better artificial joint.

If you are one of the people”playing with pain” or is in the process of putting off knee replacement than you may be interested in supplementing with Vitamin D3. I began supplementing with Vitamin D3because of it’s anti-cancer properties (I am a long-term cancer survivor).

I’ve been supplementing with Life Extension Vitamin D3 (1000 x 3 daily) for years. Vitamin D3 has a host of health benefits. As the studies linked and excerpted below indicate, supplementing with Vitamin D3 will improve osteoarthritis of the knee.

Does Vitamin D Improve Osteoarthritis of the Knee: A Randomized Controlled Pilot Trial

“Methods-This randomized controlled pilot trial prospectively enrolled 107 patients with knee OA with vitamin D insufficiency (25(OH)D ≤ 50 nmol/L) to receive oral vitamin D or placebo. The primary outcome measures were pain and function, and the secondary were biochemical markers. At baseline, the two groups were comparable. The patients were followed for 1 year.

Results-At 12 months, knee pain had decreased in the vitamin D group … whereas in the placebo group, it increased… Likewise knee function improved in the vitamin D group over the placebo group. There were significant biochemical changes in serum total calcium, 25(OH)D and alkaline phosphatase.

Conclusions- The results above suggest there is a small but statistically significant clinical benefit to vitamin D treatment in patients with knee OA…

Modest benefit from vitamin D supplementation observed in patients with knee OA after 2 years

“A multicenter, parallel, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial was conducted with 413 patients with symptomatic knee osteoarthritis (OA) and insufficient serum vitamin D levels

At baseline and follow-up, pain was assessed using the WOMAC pain score, and changes in knee tibial cartilage volume were measured using MRI
