Arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury may be excreted in appreciable quantities through the skin, and rates of excretion were reported to match or even exceed urinary excretion in a 24-hour period.

A multiple myeloma diagnosis invariably causes the patient to wonder about causes, risks, etc. I read countless posts to forums from myeloma survivors who for years either lived on a farm or next to one breathing pesticides. I worked in a printing plant for about 5 years preceding my diagnosis of multiple myeloma.

Studies vary but estimates for environmental and chemical causes of cancer in general focus on approximately 6% of all cancer deaths.

The articles below point to chemical exposure as one of the environmental causes of myeloma. Another environmental cause is exposure to benzene in a printing plant. While no one can definitively say that one cause or another is the reason for a person’s MM diagnosis, it is clear to me that heavy metals exposure increased the risk of MM.

I mention the above because whole-body hyperthermia aka detoxification is an evidence-based, non-toxic therapy for myeloma patients and survivors. I sauna several times each week for 15-20 minutes at about 200 degrees Fahrenheit and increase my internal body temperature to approximately 102 degrees. I sweat out heavy metals several times each week.

Though many people scoff at the idea that people can sweat out heavy metals such as mercury, arsenic, and cadmium, the research says otherwise.

The fact is that there are dozens of evidence-based, non-toxic therapies for multiple myeloma. I have remained in complete remission from my myeloma since April of 1999 by living a non-toxic, anti-MM lifestyle through nutrition, supplementation, lifestyle, bone health, mind-body therapies and more.

“Conclusion-Farmers seem to have increased risk for MM. Pesticides rather than animal exposure seem to be a possible risk factor. However, a major limitation of this analysis is the presence of significant heterogeneity across the studies and the evidence of publication bias in some models. Level of education seems to be an important covariable and should be considered in studies analyzing occupation.

A pooled analysis using individual-level data could provide more power and permit the harmonization of occupational and exposure coding data.”

Hi Mr. Emerson,

I am 55 years old and I was diagnoses with Multiple Myeloma in September. I have suspected exposure to Glyphosate and heavy metal as possible causes. I grew up surrounded by corn fields and farms so glyphosate exposure is likely and I plan to do a heavy metal test after my first round of treatments are complete in January. I am very curious to know more about “living a non-toxic, anti-MM lifestyle through nutrition, supplementation, lifestyle, bone health, mind-body therapies and more”. We already eat mostly organic and only grassfed/finished meat. I try to avoid plastics and cleaners. What else do you do that I can incorporate to kick this into a long remission?

We live in a super fund site contaminated from a coal ash pond. My husband has a rare sinus nasal can. He is being treated at the University of Chicago. I believe exposure to fly ash both blown or aerosolized or from contaminated well water that has been an issue for our town. Although, the offending company will insist there is no causational link. I was wondering if there has been any new evidence or causational proof in this area of fly ash contamination?

I am sorry to learn of your husband’s nasal cancer. Though there may be a link between your husband’s cancer and ash pollution, it is very difficult and expensive to prove to the satisfaction of a jury. The only proven environmental issue that I know of are the cancers that resulted in first responders of 9/11 in NYC.

Thank you for this article David. It was suggested by my Naturopath that my continuing bone pain from Multiple Myeloma may be due to lead toxicity. Do you have a HEAVY METALS test that you recommend? I am in Canada. Cheers! ~ Penny

I know little about heavy metals testing. Since my MM diagnosis I’v always believed that detoxification therapies would be a good thing for me to do. I am sorry I can provide you with more information.

My mother had mercury in her teeth and took the flu shot for 5 years died of multiple myeloma. I am convinced it was the mercury & aluminum. No one on either side of our family has ever had cancer until my mother. My father developed dementia after he started the flu shots.

I am sorry for your loss. Environmental factors increasing or actually causing MM is fairly well-established.

Based on my own experience, I think your thinking is correct. Unfortunately, we will never know because oncology doesn’t test for heavy metals exposure in MM.
