Multiple Myeloma – NSAIDS, Kidney, Heart Health

The evidence that the drugs increase the risk of heart attack, stroke and heart failure (and kidney disease) “is now extremely solid,” he said.

I am a MM Survivor and MM Coach. A client I’m working with mentioned that his doctor told him to take Motrin for his back pain. The challenge to this MM patient is that a common multiple myeloma side effect is kidney damage.   NSAIDs, myeloma, as well as other conventional medications can cause kidney and heart damage. He may have damaged his kidneys and/or his heart without knowing it.

I am a long-term MM survivor living with a host of collateral damage from the toxic therapies that I underwent when I was first diagnosed with my incurable cancer. I live with and manage heart disease which is why I read the article below anxiously.

First and foremost, if you have been diagnosed with multiple myeloma you’ve got to become hypersensitive to possible multiple myeloma side effects. MM causes a number of symptoms. MM chemotherapy and radiation cause a number of mm side effects.

The two issues to take from the article below:

  1. “Professor Lambert said the warning might encourage people to manage pain without drugs
  2.  “It’s a risk-benefit decision…”

My chronic atrial fibrillation can’t withstand the risks from NSAIDS. Therefore I take curcumin,  omega 3 fatty acids, enzymes (wobenzyme), others to manage pain, inflammation and heart health without drugs.

A diagnosis of multiple myeloma can put you in a completely different situation, a different class than everyone else. Please question conventional medications such as NSAIDS and learn about evidence-based but non-conventional therapies that can help you manage your MM as well as your health in general.

Experts Urge Sparing Use of Nonaspirin Painkillers

“The Food and Drug Administration warned last week that the risk of heart attack and stroke from widely used painkillers that include Motrin IB, Aleve and Celebrex but not aspirin was greater than it previously had said. But what does that mean for people who take them?…

One of the underlying messages for this warning has to be there are no completely safe pain relievers, period,”

The evidence that the drugs increase the risk of heart attack, stroke and heart failure “is now extremely solid,” he said…

The over-the-counter medications, which have the lowest doses,

  • probably increased risk by about 10 percent, he said.
  • Low-dose prescription medications were likely to increase the risk by about 20 percent and
  • higher-level dose prescription medications by about 50 percent

People over 65 with a history of heart disease should be especially careful, Dr. Wilson said.

Curcumin health benefits

“This agent has been shown to regulate numerous transcription factors, cytokines, protein kinases, adhesion molecules, redox status and enzymes that have been linked to inflammation. The process of inflammation has been shown to play a major role in most chronic illnesses, including neurodegenerative, cardiovascular, pulmonary, metabolic, autoimmune and neoplastic diseases…”

Omega-3 Fatty Acids health benefits

“The use of NSAID medications is a well-established effective therapy for both acute and chronic nonspecific neck and back pain. Extreme complications, including gastric ulcers, bleeding, myocardial infarction, and even deaths, are associated with their use. An alternative treatment with fewer side effects that also reduces the inflammatory response and thereby reduces pain is believed to be omega-3 EFAs found in fish oil…”
