Hydrogen Peroxide as Bladder Cancer Therapy

“The clinical effects of BCG on bladder cancer might be mediated by the production of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), according to new research published online in The Journal of Urology…”

Hi David- What are the chances of using Hydrogen Peroxide or any other alternative therapy for a bladder cancer with lung metastasis, 84 years old patient? After several TUR and BCG treatment failed, he is going to be treated with chemotherapy soon in the hospital, just to relieve the pain.

Hi Xavi-

I am sorry to read of the 84 year old’s metastatic bladder cancer.

When you cite failed bladder cancer treatments TUR and BCG, I assume you are talking about:

  • transurethral resection of the bladder tumor (TURBT) and
  • Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG)

I understand that the BC patient has already tried BCG therapy however the study linked below cites a possible interaction between BCG and Hydrogen Peroxide.

Further, with respect to the pain management you mention, I’ve linked a general article about BC pain management. I hope it helps.

To summarize, I have little experience with HP and BC. I can’t offer much information other than the studies linked below.

Hang in there,

Pain Management with Advanced Bladder Cancer: What to Know

“Is bladder cancer painful?

When it’s in its earliest stages, bladder cancer doesn’t usually cause much pain. Some people have no pain whatsoever, while others may experience pain or burning when they urinate. Blood in the urine, either microscopic or visible to the naked eye, is commonly the first sign of bladder cancer.

As the cancer grows and spreads to other areas of the body or during treatment for bladder cancer, pain may become a bigger issue. You may experience pain:

  • in the pelvis
  • in the back
  • in bones
  • when having sex

Therapeutic action of BCG mediated by H2O2?

“The clinical effects of BCG on bladder cancer might be mediated by the production of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), according to new research published online in The Journal of Urology

Despite BCG being an established treatment option for non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer, its mechanism of action remains unclear. Existing data largely suggest that BCG triggers an immune response in the bladder, leading to tumour cytotoxicity. However, BCG has also been shown to generate oxidative stress in the bladder. To investigate this association further, Gopitkumar Shah and colleagues at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, USA, performed a series of experiments to assess the relationship between cellular redox status and the antitumour effects of BCG…”

BCG Treatment for Bladder Cancer: Usage, Efficacy, Side Effects, and More

“Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) is the main intravesical immunotherapy for early stage bladder cancer. It’s made from a weakened strain of Mycobacterium bovis, a vaccine for tuberculosis.

Immunotherapy is used to prompt the immune system into attacking cancer cells. BCG is a liquid drug that can be deposited directly into your bladder through a catheter. Doctors have been using this method of treating superficial bladder cancer for 40 years.

When comparing BCG to other bladder cancer treatments, it’s important to remember that treatment isn’t the same for everybody. Some of the factors that determine your options are:

  • type of bladder cancer
  • stage at diagnosis
  • your age and general health
  • how well you tolerate certain treatments
