“You will find you are between 1.9 and 5.7 times more likely to die in 5 years at the average SEER facility (Statistics developed by the National Cancer Institute) than if under the care of one of these exceptional myeloma professionals or under the care of a doctor considered to be a myeloma specialist.”
The point of this blog post is to point out that while the list of “Top-Rated US Cancer Centers” is worthy of note, the list of Myeloma (MM) Specialists and Hospitals below is below is different and more nuanced.
By nuanced, I mean, for instance, that James Berenson’s Institute for Myeloma & Bone Cancer Research, manages multiple myeloma very differently than, does MD Anderson. The IMBCR does not provide autolgous stem cell transplants while MD Anderson does. The IMBCR focuses exclusively on multiple myeloma and MD Anderson treats all cancers.
Both organizations offer above average five-year survival rates for MM patients but they provide MM patients a fundamentally different MM experiences. Dr. Berenson is a multiple myeloma specialist while MDAnderson is a cancer institution with a number of practicing oncologists.
Have you been diagnosed with multiple myeloma? What stage? What are your symptoms? Scroll down the page, post a question or comment and I will reply to you ASAP.
