we describe an alternative, curcumin (diferuloylmethane), a component of turmeric (Curcuma longa) that is inexpensive, orally bioavailable and highly safe in humans, yet can block TNF-α action

I had to find out the hard way.  I had to experience all the side-effects of chemotherapy and radiation before I truly understood how dangerous chemoradiation was. In my defense the collateral damage caused by chemoradiation entailed long-term and late stage damage that my oncologist never explained could happen. I’m not sure that even Dr. Berger understood the damage my body would sustain from the toxic therapies that he prescribed. After all, I’ve outlived all of the conventional oncological predictions.

If you take Humira or Enbrel you may be in the same position I was in. Sure, you say to yourself, “there are side effects but nothing I can’t manage.” Or maybe you and your doctor don’t even know the long term damage of these drugs.

Keep in mind that this isn’t necessarily an all or nothing proposition. In many cancers curcumin enhances the efficacy of certain chemotherapies while it moderates the toxicities.

I often say to myself, “if I knew then what I know now...”

I am a long-term cancer survivor and cancer coach. I take Life Extension Super Bio Curcumin for it’s bioavailability. It has been tested and approved by Consumerlab.com, an independent testing agency.

Curcumin: an orally bioavailable blocker of TNF and other pro-inflammatory biomarkers.

“TNFs are major mediators of inflammation and inflammation-related diseases, hence, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the use of blockers of the cytokine, TNF-α, for the treatment of osteoarthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, psoriasis and ankylosis.

These drugs include the chimeric TNF antibody (infliximab), humanized TNF-α antibody (Humira) and soluble TNF receptor-II (Enbrel) and are associated with a total cumulative market value of more than $20 billion a year.

As well as being expensive ($15 000-20 000 per person per year), these drugs have to be injected and have enough adverse effects to be given a black label warning by the FDA. In the current report, we describe an alternative, curcumin (diferuloylmethane), a component of turmeric (Curcuma longa) that is very inexpensive, orally bioavailable and highly safe in humans, yet can block TNF-α action and production in in vitro models, in animal models and in humans.

In addition, we provide evidence for curcumin‘s activities against all of the diseases for which TNF blockers are currently being used. Mechanisms by which curcumin inhibits the production and the cell signalling pathways activated by this cytokine are also discussed. With health-care costs and safety being major issues today, this golden spice may help provide the solution.”

Hello,
Thank you for providing very useful information. My dad was just diognosed with MM. We are waiting on the biopsy results & skeletal xray. He is in very good physical shape and eats very healthy. When we recived the diagnosis it was a shock.

Based on the information you provided we purchased resveratrol and the suoer bio curcumin. How do you recommend taking the vitamins?

Thank you so much for your insight.

Best Regards,
Teresita

    Hi Teresita-
I am sorry to read of your dad’s MM diagnosis. RE your questions about the dosing of both curcumin and resveritrol, it largely depends on your dad’s stage and what, if any, other therapies.

For example, if he is early stage MM then he may be trying to manage his MM without any toxic therapies at all. Further, if he is undergoing induction therapy such as RVd, he will want to take integrative supplements to enhance the chemo while moderating side effects of the chemo.

In general, I encourage you to start slowly with supplementation. Meaning follow the directions on the label. I also take LE super bio curcumin- one capsule is 400mg- there are MMs who have active MM who take up to 8 GRAMS of curcumin (1000 mg = 1 gram). So taking one capsule a day is 400mg a day. See how your dad feels about 400mg daily.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

    David Emerson
