Anti-Myeloma benefits of Frequent, Moderate Exercise

“The main reason why I exercise now is because I got in the habit of going to the gym. My daily trip to the gym is just that- it’s a part of my day. It’s a habit…

According to the PeopleBeatingCancer Board Member who is the Marketing Chair, the first law of marketing is to address the question “what’s in it for me?’ If you are a multiple myeloma (MM) survivor, frequent moderate exercise reduces your risk of relapse.  Further, if you are over 40 and want to keep your brain healthy, if you want to reduce your risk of diseases like Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s, you must frequently (4-6 x per week), moderately (brisk walk, gardening) exercise.

But don’t take my word for it. Sure, I’ve managed to remain cancer-free from my incurable cancer since ’99 but  am only one case. I am anecdotal evidence. Read the studies linked and excerpted below.

Ed. Note- I placed an image of a cup of coffee on this post because not only does my daily coffee help get me to my daily exercise but coffee actually makes me a bit stronger. I can do more reps, more weight, etc.

What are the benefits of exercise on the multiple myeloma patient?

  1. Improved physical function: Regular exercise can help improve strength, flexibility, and endurance, which can enhance overall physical function. This can be particularly important for multiple myeloma patients who may experience muscle weakness and fatigue due to the disease or its treatments.
  2. Bone health: Multiple myeloma can weaken bones and increase the risk of fractures. Weight-bearing and resistance exercises can help maintain bone density and strength, potentially reducing the risk of fractures and improving bone health.
  3. Reduced fatigue: Exercise has been shown to reduce cancer-related fatigue in multiple myeloma patients. While it may seem counterintuitive, moderate exercise can actually increase energy levels and reduce feelings of tiredness.
  4. Improved mood and quality of life: Physical activity releases endorphins, which are natural mood elevators. Regular exercise can help reduce feelings of anxiety and depression, improve overall mood, and enhance quality of life for multiple myeloma patients.
  5. Enhanced cardiovascular health: Some treatments for multiple myeloma, such as certain chemotherapy drugs, can affect cardiovascular health. Engaging in regular aerobic exercise can help maintain cardiovascular fitness and reduce the risk of heart-related complications.
  6. Weight management: Maintaining a healthy weight is important for overall health and may also positively impact the prognosis and treatment outcomes for multiple myeloma patients. Exercise, along with a balanced diet, can help manage weight and improve body composition.
  7. Improved immune function: Moderate exercise has been shown to boost immune function, which may help the body better cope with the effects of multiple myeloma and its treatments.
  8. Social support and engagement: Participating in group exercise classes or engaging in physical activities with friends and family can provide social support and reduce feelings of isolation, which can be particularly beneficial for patients coping with a cancer diagnosis.

Does Exercise Help Keep Our Brains Young?

“Physical fitness may be critical for maintaining a relatively youthful and nimble brain as we age, according to a new study of brain activation patterns in older people…

The upshot of the findings, he said, is that daily mild exercise such as walking and mild jogging may affect the way the brain works, so that an older person’s brain “acts like a younger brain.””

Frequent Moderate Exercise is the key to Surviving Cancer

For any activity –that mainly included walking, gardening and housework – the optimal frequency was 4-6 times per week (compared with rarely/never) which was associated with a slightly greater 17-25% reduction in the risk of vascular outcomes in this population…”

The key to your anti-cancer exercise program is “habit.”

“The articles below may help. The main reason why I exercise now is because I got in the habit of going to the gym. My daily trip to the gym is just that- it’s a part of my day. It’s a habit. I have gotten to the point in my life where I get anxious if I don’t go to the gym….”
